The Waterfront – A Scenic Spot with a “Hit or Miss” Experience
Situated beautifully on the banks of the River Ness, The Waterfront bills itself as a premier Highland Gastro Pub. While it certainly has the location and the look of a top-tier establishment, my personal experience has been a bit of a mixed bag.
The Atmosphere & Service
There is no denying that this is a great pub for a drink. The views of the river are stunning, and the atmosphere is exactly what you want from a traditional yet contemporary Scottish bar.
The Service: On a good day, the service is fast, friendly, and welcoming. However, it can be inconsistent; there are times when the “Guid Craic” promised on their website feels a little absent, and the service can feel a bit disorganized during busy spells.
The Food: A Tale of Two Kitchens?
The biggest talking point is the food. The menu focuses on modern Scottish fare, with seafood and game as their specialties, and when they get it right, it’s excellent.
The “Hits”: When the kitchen is on form, the portions are generous, the ingredients feel fresh, and the dishes are wonderfully prepared.
The “Misses”: Unfortunately, it can feel underwhelming at times. It often feels like there might be two different chefs with very different standards. One night you might get a “Super Fresh” meal, and the next, it can feel like it’s lacking that same care and quality.
Final Verdict
The Waterfront is reasonably priced for Inverness and offers a fantastic setting. It’s definitely worth a visit for a “Whisky Flight” or a pint by the river, but for dinner, it currently feels like a bit of a gamble. If you catch them on a “hit” night, you’ll have a fantastic meal; if it’s a “miss,” it may leave you wishing you’d tried elsewhere.
Pro Tip: As even their website suggests—Book Today! It is a very popular spot, and you’ll likely need a reservation to guarantee a table during dinner hours.
