Gellions Bar

The Gellions – A Buzzing Piece of Inverness History
If you want to experience a “proper” Inverness pub, The Gellions Bar is a must-visit. Established in 1841, it is famously at the centre of a heated local debate over which pub holds the title of the oldest in the city. Regardless of the claims, it remains a legendary spot for locals and tourists alike.

The Atmosphere & Music
The bar is long and narrow, creating an intimate, high-energy vibe—especially at the weekends when the live music kicks off. It’s the kind of place where the floor is usually moving and the crowd is always up for a laugh.

Seating: Be warned—at the weekend, you’ll be very lucky to find a seat. It’s a standing-room-only kind of place when the bands are on!

The Service (And a Local Secret)
Because it’s so popular, the main bar can be 4 or 5 people deep, and getting served can take a bit of patience.

Pro Tip: If the front bar is too crowded, head out into the lane to the back bar, known to locals as Monty’s. It is often much quicker to get a round there, and you can duck back in once you have your drinks—just keep that between us!

Outdoor Space
The lane leading to the back bar features heated outdoor areas, which is a great touch for smokers, vapers, or those who just need a bit of fresh air away from the main crowd. There is some limited seating out here as well.

Final Verdict
The Gellions doesn’t do food, but it does atmosphere better than almost anywhere else in the city centre. It’s loud, it’s busy, and it’s a brilliant addition to any Inverness pub crawl.
