The Chieftain Hotel – A Local Institution Under New Management
For years, The Chieftain Hotel has been a pillar of the Inverness community. It is a vast, versatile venue that has hosted everything from weddings and work nights out to more somber funeral gatherings. It truly is a “venue for all occasions.”
The Venue & Atmosphere
The Chieftain remains one of the best spots in town for socialising.
Facilities: You are spoilt for choice here with numerous pool tables, plenty of indoor seating, and a large, heated outdoor area which is a major plus.
Versatility: Whether you’re there for a quiet pint or a large event, the layout handles crowds well.
New Ownership: A Change in Direction?
As a long-time regular, I have noticed a shift since the hotel was sold. Under the previous owner, Liz, the hospitality was legendary—she was the perfect host. Since the takeover, while the physical building remains much the same, the experience has changed:
The Food: This is where the decline is most noticeable. The new menu feels disjointed and “all over the place.” Unfortunately, the quality isn’t what it used to be, and the choices don’t seem to fit the classic character of the venue.
Service Levels: There appears to be a significant lack of bar staff, particularly in the pool table areas. Staff are often seen passing through to handle bookings or phone calls, but getting a drink can now be a much slower process than it once was.
Final Verdict
It’s possible these are just teething problems under the new owners, but for now, the Chieftain feels like it’s lost a bit of its magic. It remains a great spot for a game of pool or a large gathering, but the food and service levels need to find their footing again to match the high standards set in the past.
