Dows Bar and Bistro is situated on Balloan Road, but it is important to note that the name is a bit misleading—they no longer have an active kitchen. Having stopped by recently for a meal, we were informed that they are now strictly a bar and no longer serve food.
Atmosphere & Service
We returned a week later for drinks. The atmosphere feels very much like a “locals’ bar” and wasn’t particularly inviting for newcomers. The service was a bit disappointing; the bar staff seemed more interested in playing pool with other customers than attending to the bar, which meant we had to wait to be served.
The Facilities
- Seating: On the plus side, there is plenty of seating available, and the venue is clean enough.
- Glassware: The glassware is starting to look a bit worn and could likely do with being replaced.
- Outdoor Space: There is a nice area outside which would be great in the summer months, though it is currently heavily used by people smoking and vaping. You also have to walk through a group of smokers at the front entrance to get inside.
Final Verdict
While it seems like a decent “community boozer” for the regulars, it isn’t somewhere we would rush back to. It’s a functional spot for a pint, but don’t arrive expecting the “bistro” experience.
